Deceased - The Kept

Woke up with Slough Feg's Traveller and keeping the metal riff-ownage going with this... these guys just never stop and it's awesome because of that.

Manticora- The Chance Of Dying In A Dream

Amazing thrashy power metal. Unique vocals and some unusual lyrics (for this kind of music). Found these guys back in 2001 and haven't listened to them in a while.

Death metal with Eastern influences and lyrics based on Ancient Rome. They will play tonight here so I am reasonably excited to see them. :)

These guys seemed like Ex Deo clones (or vice versa, they both debuted around the same time) so didn't bother checking them out. How do they compare musically?

As Morn Of Solace has already mentioned they are different. ADE are far more brutal and technical. Like Nile? I don´t , they are both brutal but the vocals/production are pretty different.

About the arrangements, in the last album they are more symphonic and less folk(but still at a some degree) while in the previous works they sounded much more folkie. They fit the music and themes perfectly well.

Check out Spartacus, which is the best one IMO.

Well, as much as i loved Impressions in Blood, this song kind of plodded along. Not a bad song, but boring.

Indeed, and the Beavis and Butthead snippet at the end ain't bad either.

Mercyful Fate- Legend of the Headless Rider

As scary as metal is supposed to be, it's surprising how few manage to make it.

Cradle of Filth - Heaven Torn Asunder

Pretty cool actually. I never bothered checking them out, but that could've been a mistake... I sort of lumped them in with Dimmu Borgir as symphonic, showy, shallow crap, but this is actually moody and well written. Fun for the Halloween season for sure.

That was my first power metal CD and remains one of my absolute top favorites in the genre. Tallulah is a beautiful song. I was stoked when they played it last time I saw them.

I was listening to Angra - Hunters And Prey on my way to work this morning. I really enjoy the Rebirth/Hunters era of that band and wish they maintained it for longer. The next few albums after Rebirth really didn't do it for me (though their new sound is pretty solid IMO).

Elvenking-The Play of the Leaves
This song is so god damn poppy and cheesy as hell, the chorus sounds something that My Chemical Romance would sing, and it's still a good song. I still fucking hate Damnagoras.

Savatage - In the Hall of the Mountain King, off the album of the same name

Fucking boss song. Everything about it is perfect; the main riff hits like a truck, the vocals are crazy and acrobatic, and Oliva's lead playing is utterly fantastic. This is what ideal heavy fucking metal sounds like.

For me it's somewhere between "man this is really... what the fuck" and the former. I think it's an underrated album, and I applaud Mayhem for managing to be forward-thinking in their style, while staying true to their roots on a fundamental level. In both ways, it's a major success compared to both Grand Declaration and Ordo ad Chao, and ultimately it's a much more interesting album than Chimera, even if it doesn't manage to be quite as catchy and consistent. They managed to create some genuinely horrific atmospheres on that album.

Yeah it's really good, one of those ones that clicked right away. Ordo was a unique thing, going a different route was smart. Teloch outdid himself.

It's a huge testament to his creativity, perceptiveness and skill. He had to navigate in a very tight space dictated by the style and works of both Euronymous and Blasphemer, while still creating something new and original. He's a monstrously talented musician.

I think Hellhammer, too, went above and beyond, implementing more dynamic playing, and allowing the atmosphere of the album to breathe very organically. Attila's strong and eerie performance also contributes to why the album works as well as it does.

He really did tap into that vein discreetly, it sounds quite Chimera-ish in places to me actually. Like you said the creative restrictions probably pushed him harder to craft something coherent and effective. What Nidingr I've heard has been good but not quite devastating like this. But yeah, Hellhammer and Atilla helps lol. You don't get away with writing batshit crazy riffs like that without having some ferocious talent behind the kit.

I did the unthinkable and put my iPod on shuffle mode. I had been telling myself for a long time that I "need" to hear albums in their entirety, or the listening experience would be sub-optimal, and that "random play" would be littered with throwaway intro tracks and such, and totally lack flow. Not the case - this is actually kind of fun and unpredictable (though it does keep landing on Swans for some reason).

I can't get the order right for the most part, but here are the metal tracks I can remember so far:

Spoiler: show
Meshuggah - "The Mouth Licking What You've Bled"
Urfaust - "Apparitions"
Suffocation - "Habitual Infamy" (?)
Morbid Angel - (something from Altars)
Immortal - "The Sun No Longer Rises"
Emperor - "Towards The Pantheon"
Isis - "Backlit"
Om - "Gethsemane" (?)
Napalm Death - "Christening of the Blind" (?)
Deathspell Omega - "Obombration"
Godflesh - "Wounds"
Aeternus - "Vind"
Neurosis - "To the Wind"
Drudkh - "Eternal Turn of the Wheel"
Leviathan - "Tentacles of Whorror (Revel the Tyrant)"
The Ruins Of Beverast - "Procession of Pawns"
Death - "Genetic Reconstruction"

And the non-metal tracks:

Spoiler: show
Swans - "I Crawled"; "Right Wrong"; "Nothing Without You"; "Failure"; "Cloud of Unknowing (live)"
Thomas Koner - "Teimo"
Stars Of The Lid - "A Lovesong (For Cubs)+, Part 2"; "The Daughters of Quiet Minds"
William Basinski - "The Disintegration Loops 2.2"

Mate, you should listen to music in whatever way you feel is best at any given time. If shuffling works for you, that's fantastic. I don't do shuffle, but sometimes I like making playlists of individual great songs, and try to arrange them in a way where they blend into each other as smoothly as possible regarding tempo, key, production style and rhythmic themes if I can. It's challenging and fun, and it's a new way to hear songs that you've been listening and enjoying for a longer time. The other day, I made a playlist of acoustic guitar and vocals driven ballady songs that I like, and I had the chills for most of the 35 minutes that it lasted!

When I'm not listening to brand-new albums for the first time, it's shuffle all the way for me. I'd go insane otherwise.

I pretty much always listen to albums all the way through. I like stuff with a good flow to it and I don't listen to stuff where I only like one song or something very often - mostly everything I play often, I want to hear the full album.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son

This really is an excellent piece - you forget how nuanced and well written it really is, real lean and trim with a lot of complex shit going on in the songs.
