I like Make a Change... Kill Yourself, though. It strikes me as tongue-in-cheek-enough to actually work pretty well.

Also, I like it when people complain that a band name makes them impossible to look up on a search engine, as if the text field limits you to one word. :roll: This is when you're supposed to search for stuff like "mayhem norway" and "death scream bloody gore" and "master death metal", guys...

Don't know about worst but a couple of band names that don't really do justice to their music are Atheist and Gorguts. The first is a bit too simplistic and the second is a little crude relative to the music.

Gorguts' music was pretty simplistic and rudimentary back in their Considered Dead days. I don't know why everyone seems to pretend that that album is somehow just as intellectual as the band would be on Obscura and From Wisdom to Hate.

For me it's all those wannabe-brutal names, in the vast majority of cases brutal death metal or grindcore. Don't have any good examples right now, but I've seen plenty of band names appear on the main page with all sorts of "brutal vomit", "disembowelment" and stuff like that... It's kind of beyond me how can that be taken seriously on any level. Even ridiculous names like Goatpenis are better.

Also, I've seen the band Destroyer 666 appear here a lot early on. Why? The name is a bit funny and over the top, but it's seriously metal as fuck (if I listened to them I'd totally get a T-shirt right away).

What's funny about Disembowelment is that the name doesn't reflect the music or lyrics at all. You'd think they'd be a grindcore or gory death metal band or something, but instead you get philosophical, dreary doom/death. I mean, 'Transcendence into the Peripheral' - just look how that album name clashes with the band name.

Yeah maybe, I really have no interest in that direction - it's just that names like that are really just plain stupid for me. Even if the band does have this whole gory/brutal theme going on, I'm pretty sure it's possible to find a band name that reflects that but isn't absolutely ridiculous and off-putting. From the obvious cases, I'd say Cannibal Corpse makes it fairly obvious what to expect from the band, but it doesn't bring that "...what? Seriously?" feeling. Though that's probably subjective of course.

I feel like people who like metal and have a problem with the name Destroyer 666 just don't get it. Obviously the band didn't intend for it to be a serious name that would pop up in indie coffee shops and mainstream magazines. It's supposed to be silly. And it's awesome.

Any band name with 3 or more words. Makes me think more of a song than a band. Also names like 1349, 1389, 300 Cobras, Gestapo 666 etc. Numbers don't belong into names.

No. The band's music is dreary and introspective, but it's also incredibly heavy and quite brutal at times. Secondly, the band name is far superior to idiotic names like Goatpenis, obviously. How you could think anything else is far beyond my understanding.

Sorry, but I definitely prefer ridiculous names like Goatpenis rather then WE'RE SO UBER BRUTAL AND GORY names. At least in the first case I know they're probably not taking it seriously.

Indeed, Goatpenis would be about on level with something ridiculously try-hard brutal, which Disembowelment isn't by any stretch of imagination. Do you think Goatpenis is a better name than Decapitated or Dismember too? Disembowelment is a name that can be taken completely seriously, very much to the extent to which their music can be.

Goatpenis would be on level with Torsofuck or Short Bus Pile Up. I even prefer the medical slam band names to that.

In SBPU's defense, they started as a blatant joke band who played deathcore/"cybergrind". They became a more serious band later but didn't want to change the name. It's a dumb name objectively but not offensively so.

Just imagine selling any of these names to a non metal listening friend. Which one sounds better?

"Hey, check out this band I like, Goatpenis!"

"Hey, check out this band I like, Disembowelment!"

The latter would still get you some looks, but it at least sounds more somber and straight up than fucking Goatpenis.

Also, M-Pire of Evil is a terrible name. Never listened to them because of it.
