The riff at the end of Sepultura - Inner Self sounds like the main riff of Bulletbelt - Sniper.

The pre-verse riff (at around 0:55) in Black Stone Wielder by Candlemass sounds like the main riff of Shout at the Devil- Motley Crue

Not that I'm suggesting that the mighty Candlemass would use a Motley riff :-P

I noticed that the cover got Vektor's album "Terminal Redux" is similar to the cover of Nocturnus's "Thresholds" (both have a space-ship of a similar shape hovering over a green planet, with a red moon in the background).

Gorguts - "With Their Flesh, He'll Create". Riff at 1:21 similar to first Suffocation riff.

https://youtu.be/UP-3zlUxNO0

Gorguts - "The Erosion Of Sanity". Riff at 1:17 similar to second Suffocation riff

https://youtu.be/rZU_uta6Ows

Suffocation - "Beginning Of Sorrow". Riffs at 1:45 and 3:27.

https://youtu.be/QL02-hzYmEU

Hmm... It makes me wonder if Suffocation maybe cheated just a bit.

A lick in one of the newer Theocracy tracks reminds me of a lick from one of the oldest Buckethead songs that never made it on an album. I'm almost positive that this lick came from something else, but I have no idea what from. Different notes and tempos, but played very similarly.

The lick from Theocracy and the lick from Big B

Pretty much all of Iron Maiden is a variation Thin Lizzy's main riff in "Emerald"

The breakdown in Chaos Breed by Entombed sounds like a slowed down sludgier version of the breakdown in Raining Blood

Just realised Freezing Moon's intro riff sounds an awful lot like Darkthrone's Eon's.

First post!

Did anybody noticed that the beginning riff in Carcass' Reef of Putrefaction (https://youtu.be/q_kCNfXRGFo?t=20) is the same than Cathedral's Commiserating the Celebration (https://youtu.be/EZkufellkew?t=656) ?

I hadn't realised that, my Cathedral CDs are kinda sitting in a box somewhere gathering dust, but I do need to give 'em all another listen. Anyway, the similarity might be down to the fact that Lee Dorrian from Cathedral was in Napalm Death with Bill Steer from Carcass who I have a feeling wrote the music to Reek of Putrefaction, so Steer coulda showed the rest of the band the riff which they evidently didn't use and Dorrian could've got it from there. Could be completely wrong but since there's a link there I don't know.

These two prog Thrash bands do share a riff, though the latter is the newer band

It might say something about their influence/s if I'm not wrong.

Carcass 'Heartwork' sounds a lot like Kreator's 'People Of The Lie', mainly the chorus.

The intro riff to ”Fimbulwinter's Spell” by Satanic Warmaster has a similar pattern to the main riff of Sabaton's ”Ghost Division”.

East German Babylon have used a riff that is criminally similar to/the same as the one in Saxon's The eagle has landed (which you all know) in their song Freitag Abend ("Friday night", Dynamit full-length, 1988).

Saxon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AN22NuPaDA&t=122s

Babylon: http://www.metal-samples.com/search/label/Babylon

Very similar 03:05 onwards, exactly the same 03:46 onwards (only played faster). I doubt anyone here knows the latter song.

The main melody of "My Eternal Dream" (Stratovarius) is similar to "Dark Comet's Reign" (Luca Turilli)

Holy shit that's funny. Just goes to show it's all about performance, production and presentation that determines genre. Catchy rock music is mechanically the same across all platforms.

Has anyone else noticed how similar is Helloween's a tale that wasn't right to Accept's can't stand the night? Both songs have a similar essence musically speaking. I was listening to Breaker (the album) at work and when the chorus of can't stand the night started off I thought for a moment I was listening to keeper of the seven keys, I almost started mentally singing "in my heart, in my soul".

I and a few people I know think that The Faceless's Auto-theism album during the first half they are pulling a lot of sounds that you would hear from Opeth albums, and other grandiose prog-metal like that.

Also the carnival keyboards sound almost identical to 'Into the woods' cover by a hippie band my friend likes.

um, never noticed anything, and even now you mentioned it I still don't, but you're not entirely wrong... can't place what it is exactly. the stark difference in the voices won't let me work it out...

I saw this the other day when I was browsing through my collection and I took a minute to really appreciate the artwork on Dark Roots of Earth. This is pretty cool, on the artwork for Dark Roots, if you look into the clouds underneath the logo, you'll see some of the faces in the sky as on the Souls of Black artwork. One of them is even identical to the other. Apologies if this has been pointed out already.

Listening to Blasphemy a lot lately, every time the "chorus" riff of "Demoniac" comes in I want to yell "Sputter Supper!!" as it's the same riff as the chorus of that Pungent Stench song.

Nile ripped off the melody from the horror movie Creepshow for "Lashed to the slave stick"

Master's hammer used Fantomas main theme in the intro for "Geniove"

Also, some parts in Bathory "Blood and Iron" are inspired by the intro of Queen "The prophet song". Quorthon's acoustic melody at 1:50 resembles Mercury's vocal line (0:37)

The opening riff of the title track off Banished's Deliver Me Unto Pain is almost identical to the opening riff of Jungle Rot's Demigorgon.

Divlje Jagode, one of Bosnia's (and the ex-Yu area in general) most famous metal bands, kinda stole the main riff from Black Sabbath's Paranoid outright in their hit song, Motori.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzCv2A_O75U

Despite this, Divlje Jagode are still able to come up with fantastic original riffs. Guess they just lose inspiration sometimes. In all honesty, though, I think this sounds better than Paranoid.
