I don't know how I managed to forget this band, since I've been covering their material recently. Maybe someone else mentioned them? I recommend Czech band Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy. Violinist is brilliant and more integral to the music than the guitarist! |

Thanks everyone!! It will take a while to get most of these recs (damn you Rapidshare! You're so slow) but in the end it seems I'll have lotsa stuff to check out

Ummm... I had forgotten the name of the band Jelonek but that band is the exact reason to why I wanted to keep the classical influence out a bit. :O Thanks though

The track "Moment In Black" from Funeral's 2nd album "Tragedies" features a violin soloing over the entire track. Beautiful stuff. For more folky stuff, try Otyg, their albums featured loads of violin and other traditional instruments. And for a more alternative take on things, check out the first 2 albums by Noxagt, the Norwegian instrumental Sludge/Grind/Noisecore three-piece (viola, bass, drums). Absolutely mental use of a viola! |

Fall of Efrafa are definately cool if you're into hardcore/punk like Tragedy/His Hero Is Gone and their ilk, with a definite love for Neurosis. And if you're into doom metal, I can't reccomend this band enough: Asunder - A Clarion Call and Works Will Come Undone I can't beleive no one else mentioned them. Best shit. Members of Weakling and Dystopia. |

I know Basilica, which is grindcore with violins. I dont know very much about them cause i dont like grindcore very much but perhaps its something for you. |

I'll add Night Must Fall, epic funeral doom which incorporates the violin quite frequently. Ulver's "Kveldssanger and much of Empyrium's work also includes cello and maybe violin (not sure about the latter) |

For full blown folk metal bands definitely check out 'Korpiklaani' and 'Eluveitie'. Considering their popularity I'm shocked they haven't been mentioned yet

Other folk or pagan metal bands with violin: Lumsk, Dalriada (on "Kikelet" only), Druzhina, Zrec... many more I can't remember right now Druzhina is pagan symphonic black metal with very classical-sounding violin on some tracks, including a beautiful piano/violin duet at the end. Very interesting album. |

Check out Hardingrock, a collaboration between Ihsahn, his wife and a traditional norwegian fiddler. It's a mix of metal and norwegian folk music. |

URO are an Anarcho Punk band who have female fronted vocals(sounds like Antischism) and use a very down-tuned violin. Definitely worth checking out although they aren't Metal. Oh and "Paller Anders Visa" by In Flames of course

Most Gothic and Symphonic bands have a violin, I don't know whether that is 'too classical' for you though. |

I'd have to agree with the previous poster. Listen to "Queen" from the album "Escape". it has a cool violin solo at the end. |
