Actually, I like that these threads come up every so often because I'm reminded of other albums from x year that I really appreciate. When I made that RYM list, there was a bunch of bands I still haven't even explored yet. Angelcorpse's Exterminate was already mentioned previously and I really like that album. Another album I would throw in is Horna's Kohti yhdeksän nousua, one of my favorite Finnish black metal albums.

I think it was a pretty low ebb personally. OPs list has about 4 good albums and a lot of terrible shit. My memory of 98 was that Black Metal had gone all "moon boots and purple eyeshadow", Nile had really yet to take off and breathe some new energy into Death Metal, and there was a deluge of weak shit coming out of Europe, mainly female fronted gothic metal and (as evidenced by almost the only people really getting behind it as a good year) power-prog stuff. There were definitely good albums released (angel corpse is a good example) but they were thin on the ground

Vintersorg - Till Fjälls was the best album in 1998.

However, I would say 1999 was a far better year in metal. Even better than 1986. Almost all of my favorite metal-albums of all time are from this year.
