Here’s what I’ve been working on this summer:

Still a work in progress and it’s my first jacket but so far I think it’s cool

The layout looks incredibly random to me, especially this Nocturnus patch. You need a big backpatch for the back.

Made a few changes since I last posted. The Demolition Hammer and Merciless patches on the front aren't sewn yet. Still trying to figure out where I want the Merciless one.

And the biggest change will be happening on the back soon. Gonna change the backpatch when I find a more suitable one to my tastes. Still love Death and Spiritual Healing, just not as a backpatch anymore.

The front will look a bit less random once I add two patches under the Cryptic and Sodom ones. But I’m keeping the sideways Nocturnus, I want a back that looks random and explosive. Maybe with a medium sized patch on the top of it.

hehe thanks bro
Still not sure which band I would choose for the backpatch. Maybe a classic black and white Voivod.

Total noob here. What's the best way to go about getting the patches on? Ironing? Sewing? Using dental floss?

Author:  MammothRider [ Mon Sep 26, 2016 2:15 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Metal Vests - Let's See 'Em If Ya Got 'Em

I sew mine on. Some are iron-able, but sewing guarantees they're long lasting. I use a machine though, so results may vary.

Great vest, Mammoth Rider! The front needs more patches though :)

I sewed all my patches by hand except the backpatch, it's fun to do.

The method I've used is:

1 Print the motive mirrored.
2 Use a pastel pencil (buy it in an artist store, they're cheap) to trace it on oven paper or whatever its called. You can use a soft regular pencil as well but since it's black it will make it hard to see on the jacket. Pastel pens are available in white, they are soft and they don't stick well, which is what you want.
3 Put the oven paper on the jacket with your tracing down and rub thoroughly over it (though make sure you keep it still!). Use something soft but firm; a rolled up bandshirt is the most metal choice. This will transfer your traced logo to the jacket.
4 Fill it in with leather paint (Also cheap from artists store. I got i tiny jar for about 8 dollars and it seems enough to cover almost the entire jacket with logos). Get a really tiny brush. To get an even white seems to take a least two layers with the paint i use.
5 Once it's dry you can wipe of the pastel with a wet paper towel or something. The paint is really tough so don't worry about that.

Total material cost for me was equivalent of about 10 dollars

Some additional tips:
Before you start drawing, make sure you will actually be able to get the pastel off by trying it on some part of the jacket were it won't show, and wipe it of. It will stick harder when you draw directly on the jacket than when you transfer it.

Tape the oven paper down over the print when you trace it, especially of its a detailed logo. It's slippery and annoying and always move without you noticing it, thus fucking up the logo. It's hard to tape because the purpose of it is that stuff should't stick to it.

If you want a symmetric and clean look, measure up and lightly draw (with pastel pen) some support lines where you want your logo. Then it's easier to get the logo straight and centered (Oven paper is slightly transparent)

Use something to rest your hand on while painting so you don't smudge the pastel. I use 3 small planks placed like an H, and move the middle one along as i paint.

Does anyone know how to properly turn a t-shirt into a back patch? Is it as simple as just cutting out the pattern and sewing it on, or is there a more involved way to do it?

Author:  SkullFracturingNightmare [ Mon Mar 27, 2017 11:18 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Metal Vests - Let's See 'Em If Ya Got 'Em

That's basically what I did, I'd suppose the amount of involvement depends on how much you want to add on to it.

But yeah, if you want to just cut the portion of the shirt that you want to make into a back patch and then sew that on nice and tight, then you can go ahead and just do that.

I have read that you should fold over the ends and sew through both layers

I'm currently in the middle of sewing the patches onto my first jacket. I've got a big back-patch and two smaller ones aligned centrally on the back. I have four smaller patches leftover. Should I put them on the front of the jacket, or on the sides towards the back?

Metal Devastation is where I got a lot of mine. Also you can find quite a bit on ebay that are decent quality. Go for embroidered patches though, screen printed ones are shit.

I suppose this thread isn't what it used to be (this one page spans back over two years!!) but I've my first jacket I'm considering metalizing and wanted to ask some basic questions. So far I just have some pins on it, but I was wondering if anybody here has any resources they would recommend to learn sowing techniques? I've sowed some patches before as part of a random halloween costume, but I know sowing into a denim jacket will require heavier duty thread and needles than I have, and I obviously want everything I do built to last. So if anyone has any online tutorials they'd recommend and refer to, I'd love to see them.

Also wondering about the quality of textile vs woven (vs embroidered?) patches, before I start mass ordering and planning everything out. Basically, I'd love any oldheads' advice on "what I wish I knew when I started making my jacket" if anything stands out!

You want to double-thread the needle before you begin sewing: that way they don't get ripped off easily. Pretty sure there are tons of videos on Youtube.
Embroidered are much less detailed but will last you years, whereas woven can almost exactly replicate artwork but are less durable, but not too much. Woven are usually more expensive. Join the Battle Jacket Gallery group on Facebook as there are a TON of sellers and makers and traders on there all around the world.
Most importantly: sew them yourself. Your vest, your work and effort will be represented. Do not be a false. And don't get ripped off by people selling patches for $80, not worth.

Use to be a jacket but the elbows disintegrated. Work in progress, been wearing this thing for a long time. Have a few patches to put on that use to be on the arms.

Finished the back of my first vest last week. I'm quite happy with it. Too bad we're not going to a show or festival anytime soon with the virus now spreading. I guess I have to show it off in/around the house to my dog and girlfriend haha.

Sewed three patches on the front but I'm still waiting on a couple of patches to decide on the definitive layout.

How the hell does one sew through leather with a needle and thread?
