Orbit Culture just dropped a new release - technically only an EP but it's 30 minutes so fairly substantial as far as EPs go. I've been listening to 'Saw' for the past week so was pretty hyped for this, solid stuff if a little formulaic at times. Any fans of groove should give it a shot for sure.

French black metal debut. Very catchy and of the less dissonant variant. On the melodic side for my usual taste. Tracks also get more and more grandiose toward the end. Représailles falls a bit flat among the general high standard on this album.

Actually went in to check the new Arkhon Infaustus that came last year. It turned out to be surprisingly meh.
Came back with this instead.

this is awesome as well. thanks!

Glorior Belli – The Apostates

So a french black metal band who now leans more towards sludge/southern rock? As per usual I have no idea how to label music, but it's metal!
But never mind that. I like what I'm hearing. Great songs and well produced.

Pretty solid stuff from Prague's Diligence. It's like a chuggier Obscura with a female vocalist. Seems like the kind of thing that could gain a massive audience:

Did anyone listen to Runelord's A Message from the Past?

Granted, it's been only a couple of days since it was released as a digital album, but it found its way to YT. It's Ced's band actually with that Bulgarian dude who sang on Blazon Stone's No Sign of Glory on vocals (damn good pipes). It sound really good, picture beefy heavy metal with some bombastic and soaring choruses.

I've heard it a couple of times. I like it a lot. Definitely not as good as Ced's other projects, but it sounds like a nice mix of several of them. In particular I really like how there are a few songs with just insane guitar solos. There are also a couple of pretty unique riffs that I've never heard anything similar anywhere else.

Mustasch - Silent Killer

Image

If you’re not from Sweden, chances are that you’re pretty unfamiliar with this band. Which is somewhat surprising, since they are publicly loved here in their native country. Some 20 years into their career they just released their ninth album. Mustasch play a form of heavy/stoner metal. Ralf, the singer, guitar player and main force behind the band sounds a lot like the singer in The Cult, whatever his name is. Anyway, the thing with Mustasch is that they have a phenomenal ability in writing melodic metal songs with great hooks. As always with these kind of bands there never is enough material for a whole album, but 3-4 songs on each disc are highly enjoyable – and so also on this album. This release is somewhat heavier then their last ones probably do to the fact that Niclas Engelin, guitarist and songwriter in In Flames have co-produced it.

Featured, silly video:

This one truly deserves to be shared, just found it yesterday and it's simply amazing. It just hits the right spot between the atmosphere it creates and heaviness. Perfect.

Actually came out last year (minus the 4th track).. I thought it was good at the time but the reissue/NSP prompted me to revisit it, and after a few listens it's hard to deny just what a total masterpiece this album is. I'm a sucker for artists who weave a coherent theme throughout an entire album and go back to certain movements over and over, which is what you'll find with this one (the climax and denouement, for lack of better terms, of each track are just sublime and are definitely interrelated).

A flawless and truly special album.

Those of you who enjoyed Wolcensmen's Songs from the Fyrgen awhile back (and fans of neofolk in general) will definitely want to check out Winterfylleth's latest, The Hallowing of Heirdom. I'll admit that I find most of Winterfylleth's metal output to be average at best, but they mix really well with Dan Capp's evident genius when it comes to traditional Saxon music and themes. There appears to be a bit of a trend with this sort of thing lately (acoustic and/or folk output by metal musicians, see Ulvesang for another terrific example, along with upcoming EPs from Oak Pantheon and Thrawsunblat), but this is some of the best of it.

Out now on Candlelight Records.

I finally got around to listen to the new album, and its most definitely worthwhile, a 4/5 would be my score.
I still think that they sound a lot like old school tech death like late era Death and Atheist. And I like it like that.

Really enjoyed this one. Very good stuff. Thx for introducing me to them.

The music in this album is right up there with the best of them, yet i cannot like the guy's vocals. It's not that i think they're bad, just not used to them.

Gave it a few tries already, it simply doesnt click.

Going to give it a few more tries for sure, the music is really awesome, hopefully i can get past it and enjoy the vocals as well.

the new Autokrator - Hammer of the Heretics is quite interesting as well

i didn't knew the band, so it was quite strange at 1st, there's a lot of different stuff going on, but after while it all comes together and works quite well

i'd give it a solid 75% easily now, with potential to improve that score with a few more listens, definitely worth checking

since the band has a post on the promotional forum, that's the link I'm going to share

Fan of Ripping death/thrash and Kaiju films? Well have I got something for you:

Oxygen Destroyer from Seattle, Washington play a fast and sweet form of death/thrash with themes centered on the old Kaiju films (Godzilla). Their debut album just dropped 5 days ago and I highly recommend it.

Heh, just discovered this the other day. I can vouch for BarrelAged's recommendation here.

Also, I can hardly find any mention of it anywhere on the Internet, but I enjoyed the new (second) Externatropsy album on first listen-guttural, caveman-like death metal that is more Pyrexia than it is modern slam like most "caveman" death metal these days.

Finally got around to the new Necrophobic and GOD DAMN! This thing slaps. Tsar Bomba has gotta be one of the best metal singles I've heard in a while, and the rest of the album is no slouch.

I'll have to check this out, I do like a decent amount of their earlier work. I thought Thank You for the Demon fired on all cylinders - there isn't a song I choose to skip when I listen to it. Testosterone was a bit of a letdown for me though, but like you said there are certainly a few songs on it that can be appreciated.

Cheers mate, glad you're enjoying it!

New song from Aeviterne (seemingly a continuation of Flourishing) just released a new song too, sounds very promising

I've been getting into the self titled release from Australian black metal project Trenches. The artwork was what originally drew me into checking it out. As expected, it's basically Darkthrone worship, but I really dig the songs.

Depravity (Australia) has put out a fantastic slab of Death Metal. It's super dense and heavy with a decent amount of variation throughout the album, along with a fuckton of riffs. Their bandcamp and MA have it listed as coming out on April 30, but I was able to buy the physical version and download the digital version immediately.

Here are my thoughts from the first time I listened to that Skeletal Remains album:

First song: "Eh, not sure why this is getting so much hype. It sounds exactly like Leprosy, and I mean if you're going to rip off Death you can't do much better than Leprosy so I suppose that's good, but I thought we would've learned from Gruesome that the world doesn't really need any more Death worship. Huh, oh well, that's disappointing."

Second song: "ALSDKFJA;SDOHA;SOFNEIADJLKFJSD;LAKJSF"

Yeah, there's legit AOTY potential in this album but man is Ripperology a weak start to an otherwise fantastic album. It's like a different band starts playing after the opener. The intensity is absolutely off the charts, and I get a huge Cannibal Corpse vibe from some of these songs, which is notable since CC is constantly dragged for being "generic" yet somehow there really aren't a whole lot of bands who sound like them. Definitely recommended that any death metal fan give this a whirl and soldier on if you, like me, think the first song is wholly unimpressive.

For my contribution this month, I need to give a shoutout to the new Garroted. If there's any justice in the world, these guys are gonna be viewed in the same light as Blood Incantation whenever they finally get around to dropping a full length. I'm definitely the type of dude who doesn't have a whole lot of interest in demos, but both of their two demos now are absolutely stunning. They're primed to be a Big Fucking Deal whenever they make the jump.

I can already tell that Skeletal Remains are gonna get flak thrown their way by the end of this year into next if not sooner not unlike Power Trip has. Unfortunate, but predictable. A phenomenal album and yeah, the opener is far from being the best but when the rest is so good, it’s absolutely forgivable. The growth these guys have made in every facet is incredible and refreshing. Their exposure and praise is well-earned and deserved.

And yes, I’m waiting that Garotted full-length as eagerly as anyone else, and their new EP is only building on their potential. We should have the full-length debut from Voidspawn (and of course, MA’s own Cosmic Atrophy) sometime this year to tide us over, though.

I need to listen to all those albums. I generally tend to not listen to genres of music that I'm currently writing just to avoid potential cross-contamination of musical ideas, so I'll likely listen to all of them when I'm done. I might check out a song or two though...

Uh, well I have made some posts in this thread ... But whatever, people like different music. It’s not the first time my personal opinion differs from the majority’s. Didn’t spend that much time with it though. First impression was that it sounded like a modern take on Obituary. Another band that I don’t like that much but is very popular.

Yeah it doesn’t sound like Obituary at all.

This sounds like if Asphyx, Morgoth, Death and Cannibal Corpse had a baby in 1992 then amped up the heaviness 100x. Vocalist is pretty much a dead ringer for vintage Van Drunen which I’m a huge sucker for.

A few weeks ago someone recommended Verheerer - Maltrer to me. Very strong black metal album from Germany. Not greatly innovating, but I like that. So you get tremolo riffs, and lots of fast drumming, but still pretty diverse with some mid-tempo parts. Strongest point for me are the vocals. Not just high pitch screams from start to finish, but very powerful, diverse and with "urgency".

Halfway through the new W.A.I.L. album, and I have been enjoying it a lot. It's like if someone took black metal, doom metal, Bolzer's Hero, (maybe Melechesh too??), and the darker parts of the Twin Peaks or Mulholland Drive soundtrack or something and threw it all in a blender.

I don't know what the proper adjective is for this one. I thought about it for awhile and nothing I came up with came even close to capturing the sheer brilliance of it. Easily the best album I've heard so far this year.

Inferi - Revenant

In my quest to dig further into the tech death world found another interesting band with a fresh new album. And a very good one for that matter. Honestly thought Rivers of Nihil would run away in the AOY contest as far as tech death goes, but this one, while a different approach, sounds just as good.
