Why reveal their discovery of a tempo faster than anemic shamble on an album with guys in wheelchairs?

Purchased this about a week ago and have been listening to the digital version while waiting for the CD to arrive. Really digging it a lot. It's not as out there as Herval was, but is very dark and reverb laden in a way that gives it a very off-kilter surrealist vibe. In a few ways it's almost minimalistic in its sparseness. Love this band to death.

Yeah, it's Lugubrum so of course it's good & weird.

I agree with the minimalism, and I have to say it works in a totally bizarre way(i can't be the only one who wants to dance with orakelsnoer right?). They are totally doing their own thing.

I just wish it was a bit longer, even by just one more track...

i heard it now and while its definitely good the guitar is a bit too sloppy. I know what they were going for but i think they just slightly overdid it. The vocals and drumming however are both excellent.

They seem to be trying hard to turn into a jazz band. Bless 'em. I can see why many would hate this but i think it's pretty cool. They now sound like an incredibly stoned, way stripped down naked City or something, that occasionally erupts into some black metal riffs. Barely any metal on this thing at all really. A part of me understands why people might say "hey guys, stop fucking around!", but the album feels really short and I was laughing and dancing around the whole time. Love the rather improvised feel much of the music has. And Midgaars got a bunch of new musical toys to play with and is credited with like six different instruments. And I love the horns. I dunno, they remain as weird and alienating as ever and somehow they leave me wanting more.

I was beyond smitten with Herval. Of course I can't expect them to do the same thing twice. The new one deserves a focused and extremely stoned listen which I haven't been able to accomplish. What I heard went in one ear and out the other.

I gave it a much more focused listen and predictably, I'm smitten. It's really not just some jazz Odyssey. There is extremely visceral and speed-inflected riffing going on here.

I've also listened to this quite a bit since it came out and enjoy it a great deal! Both the metal parts and the jazz parts are good, but I wish there was a bit more integration of the two. It would be nice if the songs would dive between the two styles more frequently to increase the drama and punctuate the compositions. The last two tracks in particular lose a lot of steam due to the lack of metal.

yeah, I get that, but also why it's difficult to truly integrate the jazzy parts into their usual metal riffing. I mean, I guess they sort of tried that on De Ware Honde (sp) and I don't think the results there pleased everyone, either.

Jonpo, I am glad you are digging this. Weird, every time I listen I feel like it's so damn short. I seem to remember saying the same thing about Herval though?

De Ware Hond is the shit though. Best Lugubrum ever

I don't see why orakelsnoer needed more metal. It needs the build-up with the funky/jazz melodies so that the metal part hits harder.

Btw, the band has opened a bandcamp page https://lugubrum.bandcamp.com/

I still need to properly listen to this one. I've been a fan since "De ware hond" came out. "Winterstones" is still my personal favorite.

Both albums are legit pretty short, at least compared to most bands today. Both are sub-45 which always feels like the sweet spot to me.

I'm taking HEAVY advantage of their bandcamp. Finally getting to hear all the middle albums I missed. Lion Faced Onion in particular is moving me right now.

The short run times of most of Lugubrum's output is a definite plus for me. I wish more bands would keep things slim and compact.

Fuck yes, welcome to the fold! It smells like shit and there's always a banjo plucking in the distance, but the riffs are maniacal.

Not sure what you've heard so far but De Vette Cuecken is mandatory. Some of their craziest shit ever. Beard of Disease!!!

For me Heilige Dwazen is a mandatory listen and too much overlooked, i always suggest it alongside their classic De Totem to every Lugubrum new listener :)

Yeah De Totem is my go to and I’m still very fond of Winterstones though I know it’s waaay more conventional. Lugubrum doesn’t get enough love imo.

Heilige Dwazen I hadn't heard. Jamming it on bandcamp now and I'm already smitten with that intro.

Yeah Heilige Dwazen is awesome.

We Slyly Sucked Stolen Bread has one of my favourite lugubrum riffs...
