The description sounds good. I thought "Meta" was a bit too flat; it didn't have the dynamic songwriting and sonic excitement of "Sgurr" which was much brighter in tone and more eclectic. TC has always succeeded when trying the "everything and the kitchen sink too" approach, as much as any other band which has remained genuinely metal while doing so. I do appreciate that they change things up with each album, however. The result has been this band has succeeded in making as many kinds of good metal as five other "average" good bands.

Listening to the song: toot toot all aboard the hype train!

Meta was a bit too calm for my liking. For me, it'll probably be remembered as his weakest album and I actually preferred his non-metal album (Neolunar) from the same year. I'm always up for more from Tamas though.

Also, Winterfylleth just announced their next album, The Hallowing of Heirdom for April 6th. I'm looking forward to that.

Ihsahn has got a new called "Ámr" coming on May 4th and I'm getting really hyped.

Artwork:

Image

01. Lend Me The Eyes Of The Millenia
02. Arcana Imperii
03. Sámr
04. One Less Enemy
05. Where You Are Lost And I Belong
06. In Rites Of Passage
07. Marble Soul
08. Twin Black Angels
09. Wake

Will feature a guest solo by Fredrik Akesson from Opeth. If the album as good as "Arktis", it might make it to AOTY shortlist. The last one was awesome, though it took me a bit of time to appreciate it fully. Full press release here.

Didn't he just put out an album last year, or was it 2016?

It was in spring 2016. So this one is coming 2 years and 1 month later.

Fuuuuuck Ihsahn & Thy Catafalque at the same day. Probably the best day of 2018.

But artwork is really ugly, especially that fur thing on the throne(not that the horns looking any better)...

Atheist signed to Agonia Records and confirmed a new album coming out this year. I'll remain cautiously optimistic about the new album.

How the hell do you go from SOM to Agonia? And with absolutely no disrespect for the label but Atheist on Agonia Records?! Well, that's a surprise.

Not sure what to expect though, Jupiter wasn't on par with the first albums.

I'm really excited for the new Angelus Apatrida record. Probably the prime example of how to weave melody into thrash.

Well shit, now that I've learned of it from a passing mention in the Runemagick thread, I'd say I'm anticipating this:
Image
Quote:
Eight years have passed since the release of “In The Light Of Darkness”. Eight years in vigilant slumber.
Eight years we have whetted the Reaper’s scythe to once more herald our triumphant return. We are back to punish the world with the wrath of death and the force of darkness.
We are pleased to announce that Unanimated has signed a worldwide 3 album deal with Century Media Records!
Our fourth studio album is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2018

Probably shouldn't get my hopes up but I'm all for being pleasantly surprised. One of the main selling points of In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead was that perfect fog enshrouded atmosphere and good luck achieving that idiosyncratic 90s sound in 2018 on Century Media.

edit: How the hell did I not know this band put out an album in 2009. Jesus. I guess acquiring and hearing that will be a good setup for this year's release.

I'm quite excited for the upcoming Vredehammer record.
Should be released later on this year. Both previous offerings are great, explosive, riff-happy blackened death (or whatever) with some thrash here and there for good measure (specially the second album).
Anyone else into these guys? Don't remember anyone mentioning them. They seem to tour quite a bit, though. Hopefully they'll get more exposure.

Most of these bands are either working on new material or at least are due to release something in the near future.

Alice In Chains new album could probably see a late 2018 release.
Seconding Sulphur Aeon and Hyperion. Both "recent" bands that are top tier in their respective genres.
Imperial Triumphant, one of the best things to happen to BM IMO, can't wait for more chaos.
Inferi are working on new stuff. Killer band, way underrated.
New Judicator would be great, both their previous albums rule.
Wrathage should be releasing an EP very soon. Their 2015 album was awesome.
God Of Atheists is Asgeir Mickelson all-star project and theoretically should be ready soon. Stupid name, yeah, but the line-up makes me drool, go check it.
Batushka need to release a follow-up to that monster of a debut.
Esoteric, it has been way too long... hurry up! Same goes for Carpe Noctem.

I'm sure there's way more, this is just at the top of my head ATM.

Now, for the dreams/hopes...

Tool
Anata
Lykathea Aflame
Amogh Symphony
Demonoid
Arafel

I'll second your opinion on Batushka,
And I've been in contact with Greg Chandler from Esoteric for a while now,
he assures me in 2018 there will be a new Esoteric cd, again a double cd!

Swedish blackened thrash band Nekrokraft is releasing an album called Servant, this spring.
First single is here and it sounds good.

Oh fuck yeah. I forgot about this release for some reason. I loved Violator quite a lot - total riff fest with great melodic hooks and evil vocals.

Fans of melodic doom/death should not pass up the new and debut album from Texas based Hinayana. The single is really good and I have the feeling that the whole album will slay. It's a strong song:

Everything on their demo was top notch, and I've been waiting patiently for a full length for a while now. Great atmosphere and a bit more upbeat than other bands in the subgenre like Saturnus.

After listening to their latest song, Mater Dolorosa, I can confirm that I am looking forward to Augury's new album, Illusive Golden Age. Other than that, I've compiled somewhat of a list:
New Augury - Spring 2018:
So yeah, I listened to Mater Dolorosa and my face blew off. I need more of Dominic "Forest" Lapointe's bass.

New Inferi - "Early 2018"
Been big on Inferi since The Path of Apotheosis, let's see if they can top that masterwork.

New Alkaloid - Sent in to label, should be very soon (Early 2018)
I don't know why people seemed to dislike their previous album so much. The Malkuth Grimoire is one of my recent favourites, and I spin it daily on my commute to uni. I am looking forward to another 75-minute album. (Perhaps)

New Sigh - Recording almost done, a few seasons down the line maybe?
Sigh is interesting, I'd love to see where Mirai Kawashima's insane mind takes us next. Their new guitarist who also did the 'Graveward' recordings is someone I'm looking forward to hearing more from, too.

Other than that, I believe that new Obscura, Irreversible Mechanism and Beyond Creation albums are coming up. I wonder if Obscura will still be interesting (to the same extent) now that Tom Geldschläger's leads are out of the picture (not to discredit Rafael, Tom is just so unique), same with Beyond Creation without Forest on the bass. Irreversible Mechanism is just awesome space shred, and I love space shred.

I have jammed both new Augury and Inferi. The new Augury is pretty good, but new Inferi? Whewwwwww... it's gonna blow people away!

Nile reported pretty consistently in interviews last year that they were working on a new album that should drop relatively soon and also Karl mentioned working with Erik Rutan so I'm pretty curious to see how that goes, especially without Dallas. It will be much easier for me to get used to new songs without him as opposed to the new arrangement performing older songs. Although the live footage I've seen has been promising.

Karyn Crisis announced that Gospel Of The Witches will release a new album -hopefully in 2018- called Covenant

Here's a small sample https://vimeo.com/258785446

I loved Salem's Woods so I'm definitely excited.

I'm quite excited about the new Kataklysm album due out in June I believe (I think it has been pushed back from April). I'm a fan of pre and post Sylvain era Kataklysm but there's something about this new album I'm quite excited about. I can't quite put my finger on why though but I just feel it'll be quite excellent.

The new Napalm Death with their b sides and covers I'm also excited about.

Lastly, whilst it's not technically an album, I'm looking forward to the new Anthrax DVD where they played Among the Living in full in Scotland. I was at the London show and it was simply fantastic!

Djevel never disappoint if you like your black metal from Norway and still sounding like the good old days, mostly. I'm glad these guys are so active with a new album about every year.

Hopefully Dragonlord get around to releasing 'Dominion' some-time this year, or decade. 13 years after Black Wings of Destiny and many announcements that it's "due soon" there's still no news, even after Eric mentioning it was going to be released in the Autumn last year.

Witch Mountain, female fronted doom metal from Oregon, are releasing their 5th album, called Witch Mountain, on May 25. This is their first album with new singer Kayla Dixon.

Press release with stream of single Burn You Down: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2018/03/12/witch-mountain-self-titled-release

I really like Burn You Down, Kayla sounds fantastic, and the music is great too. Really looking forward to this.

Witch Mountain sounded really cool. Really like the vocalist. The deep soul-full voice really fit the style, I thought, and then when she kicked in the harsh vocals at the end I was really impressed with them. I guess we'll see if they can leverage that with some interesting writing too, but I'm cautiously optimistic
