Started as Tricky Beans in 1996, playing pop/rock music. They released three demos in this style: Friends Till the End, Agre Pamppers, and Peacemaker. The band did not take themselves or their direction very seriously until Tony Kakko had something of an epiphany while listening to the Stratovarius album Visions.
