Thalidomide

Thalidomide is a drug that was widely used to counter morning sickness among pregnant women during the late 1950s. It was discovered soon after that the drug was damaging to the developing fetus and more than 10,000 children in 46 countries were born with deformities such as phocomelia as a consequence of thalidomide use.
