The band was formed in 1998 by Nikolaj Rüster and was meant to be a one-man project with no intentions to play live. In 2000 the demo "Shining Black Horizons" was recorded but the tape is considered lost. Schattenvald's lyrics are sometimes written in local dialect.

The band's current logo (featuring mountains in the background) was designed by Christophe Szpajdel.
