Rainbow, despite being thought of as a fully-fledged band, had always been more of a Ritchie Blackmore solo project. The band started out as a side project when Ritchie wanted to record a cover of "Black Sheep of the Family", which was an idea apparently rejected by Deep Purple while recording Stormbringer.
