The Norns (Old Icelandic Nornir, singular Norn) are, according to both the Poetic and the Prose Edda, supernatural mythological women who ruled over the destiny of men. According to the Prose Edda, three Norns keep watch over the world-tree Yggdrasill, their names are Urð ("became"), Verdandi ("becoming") and Skuld ("become").
