The band was founded in late 1980 under the name Sinister Savage. In 1982, they changed the name to Griffin.

The guitarist Mike Jastremski joined Heathen in 1986 between albums, while Thomas "Hawk" Sprayberry left in 1985.

Rick Wagner and William McKay were both in early (1980-81) incarnations of Metal Church.
