Formel 1 has been founded in the former German Democratic Republic. The band has been one of the most popular metal bands from East Germany in the 80's. Besides their own material they covered metal classics of well known bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

The band split up in 1987, although there was a short-lived re-union in 1999/2000.
