Alcatraz is an island in the eastern Pacific Ocean belonging to the city of San Francisco, California.
Located two kilometres from San Francisco, Alcatraz owes its fame to having hosted, from 1934 to 1963, one of the most famous penitentiary institutions in the world, which was characterized by its conditions of maximum security and the almost total impossibility of escape.
