The band was initially named Storm but during the recording of their debut EP in August 1981, they were forced to change the name to Taipan due to international copyright problems.

Taipan originally split-up in 1987 after Emilio Sarpa left, without actually releasing an album.
The original line-up got back together in 2007, with an additional guitarist, Sam.
