Cemetary was founded by Mathias Lodmalm in 1989. At first, the band played death/doom metal but eventually started going towards a more gothic metal-oriented direction, starting with their second full-length Godless Beauty. The band was dissolved in 1997 after which Lodmald formed an industrial/gothic rock band Sundown, named after the Cemetary album of the same name.
