Koivunen is a Finnish heavy metal singer who rose to fame as the winner of the Finnish singing competition Idols in 2007; he has since gone on to become one of Finland's most popular and best-selling recording artists. His solo band Ari Koivunen was put to an end when Koivunen, in 2008, became Amoral's vocalist.


In 2015 Koivunen performed in the rock musical I Wanna Rock in Finland, and the next year he performed as Pertti Neumann, an '80s Finnish singer and bassist, in the Autiotalossa musical.

Along with JP Leppäluoto and Marco Hietala, Koivunen founded Powerless Trio in 2017, playing mostly metal and rock covers.
