Thomson is best known as one of the guitarists for the nu-metal band, Slipknot.

His early music career started in the band Body Pit, which included future Slipknot members. Mick was recruited by Slipknot from a recommendation from ex-Slipknot drummer, Joey Jordison, and replaced Craig Jones who would then shift to samples/media.

Mick was previously endorsed by B.C. Rich Guitars. In 2004 he had his own signature models released by Ibanez. He has also had his own signature acoustic/electric guitar released by Ovation.
