In 2009, published his part-autobiography, Dawn of the Metal Gods, co-written with Neil Daniels, in which he covers Judas Priest's early years.Al Atkins was in another band called "Judas Priest" who split up in 1970. Upon joining K.K. Downing and Ian Hill's band Freight later that year, they adopted the now-vacant name Judas Priest.
