Dreaming Neon Black is a concept album partially based in reality: Warrel Dane's ex-girlfriend had joined a religious group and ceased contact with him; Dane had dreamed of her drowning. In reality, she and her husband were the earliest confirmed victims of notorious serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, better known as The Truck Stop Killer. The lyrics of the album are written from the perspective of a man who goes insane after experiencing a situation similar to Dane's.
