The Circus Maximus was written and recorded as a Mark Shelton solo project. Black Dragon Records insisted it be released as a Manilla Road album to increase its commercial potential.

Recorded in 1992 at Miller Studio in North Newton, KS, USA, and Roadster Studio in Wichita, KS, USA.
