Trivia:
- First album with Blaze Bayley. The "X" in the album title refers to this being Iron Maiden's tenth studio album.
- The artwork shown is the original cover. A toned down version was created after many British chain-stores threatened to boycott the album over the graphic nature of the original artwork. The CD booklet is reversible with the original artwork printed upside-down on the other side, so either version can be displayed.
- Some of the music for 'Man on the Edge' is based on an old White Spirit song Janick Gers wrote in the early 80s (it was unreleased, hence its inclusion on the album).
- The lyrics of the song 'Sign of the Cross' are based on the Umberto Eco's 1980 novel The Name of the Rose.
- The lyrics of the song 'Lord of the Flies' are based on the William Golding's 1954 novel of the same title.
- The lyrics of the song 'Man on the Edge' are based on the 1993 movie Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas.
- The lyrics of the song 'The Edge of Darkness' are based on the 1979 film Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola, adapted from Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella Heart of Darkness.
