The cover art for the album was provided by David Patchett, but he asked to remain uncredited because he was not satisfied with the result. Reportedly, Patchett's original artwork included only Eddie and the hooded figures in the background; the figures in the foreground were said to be added by a member of Iron Maiden's web design team at Rod Smallwood's insistence because he felt the original design was too sparse.

It has also been said that the album cover was actually a prototype design provided by Patchett that the band decided to use it in its incomplete form, or that Patchett was asked to touch up the modified version of his original art and refused, meaning the draft version had to be used instead.

Michael Kenney is not credited for his keyboard performance - this is due to an oversight that saw no musicians, including the band members, being credited in the album booklet.

"New Frontier" is the first (and, to date, only) song co-written by Nicko McBrain.

"Face in the Sand" is the first, and only, Iron Maiden song to feature double bass drumming.

"Journeyman" is Iron Maiden's first ever fully acoustic track. Originally this song was recorded with electric guitars, but the band decided to convert it to an acoustic song. The original electric version can be found on the EP "No More Lies" (2004).
