Music videos were made for the songs "The Wicker Man", and "Out of the Silent Planet".

The first album to feature Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson since their respective departures in 1990 and 1993.

This is also the first Iron Maiden album to feature cover artwork by Derek Riggs since No Prayer for the Dying in 1990, though he only created Eddie's face, with Steve Stone providing the rest of the image. Riggs' portion of the artwork was repurposed from a rejected design when the album's working title was The Wicker Man. This was one of several concepts proposed by Riggs that the band rejected, and he has only worked fleetingly with them ever since. The demonic faces in the clouds around Eddie are taken directly (and uncredited) from a poster for the horror movie Fright Night (1985).

The lyric that prompted the title of The Wicker Man was inspired by the at-the-time unreleased Bruce Dickinson song, Wicker Man. The songs are otherwise unrelated.

Adrian Smith and Blaze Bayley have stated in interviews that the songs Dream of Mirrors, The Mercenary, The Nomad and Blood Brothers were originally composed when Bayley was still in the band, either during the Virtual XI (1998) writing sessions or when they were in the early stages of creating the next album before he was fired. The Mercenary also reuses music from the song Till the Kill, demoed by Janick Gers' previous band White Spirit in 1981.
