Chameleon is the last album featuring Michael Kiske on vocals and Ingo Schwichtenberg on drums. It marks an even greater departure from the band's earlier sound. In an interview, founder Michael Weikath said that they "tried to make a [The Beatles'] "White Album" and failed".

On track 11, "I Believe", conductor Axel Bergstedt directed the children's choir of the Johann Sebastian Bach orchestra of Hamburg, Germany.

Tracks 1, 5, 6, 7 by Weikath
Tracks 2, 8, 11, 12 by Kiske
Tracks 3, 4, 9, 10 by Grapow

Of the four tracks written by Roland Grapow, "Music" was a song he wrote for Rampage and "Step Out of Hell" was actually a re-recording of his previous band Rampage's "Victims of Rock" with different lyrics, dedicated to drummer Schwichtenberg's problems with drugs. "I Don't Wanna Cry No More" is on the other side dedicated to Grapow's passed away brother, Rainer.
