"Black Night" was composed after the release of "Deep Purple in Rock", as the band was asked by the label to compose a hit. The song was made for about 25 minutes, with a Ritchie Blackmore guitar riff based on the song "Summertime" by artist Ricky Nelson, followed by some random lyrics with no meaning.

1979 Mexican version of the single includes "Living Wreck" and a demo of "Speed King" as well.

Other versions include "Living Wreck", or "Into the Fire".
