The illustrations are taken from paintings by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893).
The album is subtitled "The Narratives of a Misplaced Entity" on the back cover.
The title "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a reference to the book "The Wind in the Willows" (1908) by Kenneth Grahame, and that Pink Floyd also used it for their 1967 album.
