"Fortune" is based on a threefold alchemical treatise called "Atalanta Fugiens" by Michael Maier, first published in Latin in 1617. Each fugue has an image, a Latin text, and musical notation for voices in three parts.

"By the Well of Living and Seeing" and "The Fifth Book of The Maccabees" were published by the author Charles Reznikoff in New York in 1969.
