Co-released Megaforce Records & Island Records.

Trivia:
- The album peaked at #62 on the Billboard 200.
- The album is dedicated to the memory of Cliff.
- According to the liner notes, the figure on the cover is supposed to be Randall Flagg, a character from Stephen King's The Stand. He also inspired the album's title.
- Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.) is "Nice Fucking Life" in Anthrax-speak (backwards).
- This was one of the first Anthrax albums to obtain Gold status by the RIAA.

Anthrax had a falling out with producer Eddie Kramer during the mixing of the album, as he wanted to give them a more "polished" sound, but eventually the band members prevailed.

On Anthrax's reunion tour in 2005 the majority of their concert set consisted of material from "Among the Living" while on their 2006 tour at solo-dates they performed the album in its entirety.
