I’m Nick, of Bay Area group Survival. We’re releasing a new album this April, and I wanted to share it with you.
In 2009, Marcus Kirchen, of Hatchet, Sam Vincent (RIP) of STD and I came together to form Survival. Influenced by Exodus and Cro-Mags, we sought to create a sound that paid homage to the vibrant east bay thrash and hardcore scene of the 80’s while marrying modern psych and garage influences.
Two years ago, while Survival was gradually developing, I toured Europe with Hellcat Records band Static Thought and played the Reading and Leeds Festivals (sharing the stage that year with Guns N Roses, Nofx, Queens of the Stoneage). Since then, I've collaborated with musicians from Apache, Drunk Horse, The Cuts, Andy Jordan of Lenz, Roberto Miguel and more. Over the years, Survival's line up has changed, but the concept of Bay Area underground fusion has stayed the same.
The most recent incarnation of Survival features Mike Tappero and Roland Sayn. Recently, Survival has shared bills with Japanther, The Pharmacy, Twin Steps and other Bay Area staples such as Casey & Brian, Twin Steps, Religious Girls, Antwon and Chippy Nonstop. Our music was featured in the Pharrell-produced 'City is Ours' documentary on local graffiti artist GATS.
We plan to release our new full length record on vinyl and tour in its support. Our latest record is the fruit of a collaboration with Zack Ohren of Castle Ultimate records. Heavy hitters such as Warbringer, Machine Head and All Shall Perish have also recorded with him, and we aspire to contribute to the ever thriving local metal dialog.
Our album will be available physically later this year.
