My review scores are not based on any assesment of average track quality. For example, a double album that provides one album length worth of incredible material and one album length of decent but not spectacular music deserves the rating of a wholly incredible album. An important factor is the separation of quality and lacklustre material. Several excellent riffs buried in a mass of scarcely tolerable tripe will not earn a positive rating.
In my ratings, 50% attempts to be the watershed between positive and negative. 51% would still be (though extremely marginally) enjoyable, whereas 49% the opposite. Of course I realise that such a narrow distinction is impossible, but the line must be drawn somewhere.
