| My rating scale is roughly as follows:
91-100% - Classic, essential for all 81-90% - Minor classic, essential for fans of the style 71-80% - Flawed, but worth checking out 61-70% - Only worthwhile to completists 51-60% - Barely better than silence. 50% - Dead silence; totally neutral. Anything below that is actively irritating, and is not worth anyone's time under any normal circumstances. Keep in mind this is just a very general guideline, and there will often be albums that fall into the 71-80% range that have a couple of very excellent songs, which would be worth over 90% on their own, but they are held back by some songs of much lesser quality (see my Glory Bell's Band review for a good example). For that reason, don't dismiss an album I give a lower score without first reading the review to see if there aren't some great songs lurking among the worse ones. My reviews for Amorphis, Archetype, Budgie, Elegy, and Rush are all much older, and could do with some revision. Someday, maybe. | |
