This is one the best albums I have ever heard. Good enough to make me check their website every single day for the last year for updates on their next album. Jari puts together my favorite things from many genres of metal: technicality with feeling and meaning, perfect vocals that range from higher-pitched melodeath to amazing clean vocals, and a real cause to do what he did. The music he wrote sounds so sonically and melodically perfect on this album, I can't even describe it. Every audiophile will love the production and orchestration, without a doubt. But I guess I should try… I’ll listen to it for the 122nd time and tell you about the album as it progresses.
The album is basically split up into epic slow parts and epic fast parts. The first two songs, for the most part, are fast and exhilarating. Perfectly sized Beyond The Dark Sun kicks it off with one the only times you’ll hear music without keyboards accompanying it. Great song to get you hooked to Wintersun from the start. (Kind of like what Jari did with Ensiferum’s first 2 albums). Winter Madness starts off as super hectic but leads into an amazing chorus and an even better guitar solo. This song is one of the best things that man has ever created.
Sleeping Stars is the first (sometimes) slow song of the album. This song is really relaxing and incorporates some of the best use of ambience I have ever heard in a metal song. You also get to hear the first clean singing. This song is another gem and I consider it another masterpiece. The drums in this song are simply amazing as well. Kai shows his amazing skills on the skins and his mastery of his set. Oh, and the end is so perfect… Sleeping Stars is wonderful and I’ll leave it at that.
Battle Against Time starts off super fast, guitar based. Amazing orchestrations with layered chants from Jari. Just around where the harsh vocals come in, you get another perfect atmosphere and some insanely fast sections. Oh god, Battle Against Time is everything you could want in a song. Epic, fast, slow, guitar mastery, unmatched instrumentation and drumming, amazing guitar solo, amazing chorus and chants. YES!!!! Just listen to it, then you’ll understand.
Death and Healing is probably the most relaxing song so far, unless you’re like me and you thing become engulfed in this album, then it’s just majestic. The opening is instrumental for more than 1 minute and you get to Jari’s clean vocals. The guitar solo comes in and you get one the best treats of the album. Multiple solos and different styles from pentatonic, I dare say bluesy licks (YES! LICKS!), into Paul Gilbert style shred with a lot more arpeggios and neck pickup. The sweeping section is amazing and very fitting for the music. Jari is a mastermind I must say! Great song.
Starchild. I don’t know where to start. One of the best songs on the album if not the best. The vocals, instrumentation, writing, melody, ideas, everything is perfect. You just have to find a way to listen to it. Just unbelievable. Beautiful Death and Sadness and Hate round off the album with a beautiful end and the most epic parts of the album. I want to write a paragraph for each song, but I don’t want to ruin the end for anyone.
This album is literally perfect. Jari put his heart and soul in this music and it turned out to be one of the most creative and tasteful pieces of music I have ever heard. There is only one Wintersun, and you must hear it to believe it. This is worth buying, and if you download it, try to buy it later. You owe some gratitude to Jari and Kai (and the whole new lineup) for this stellar record. 100%.
