Kam Lee has always been known for his lyrics heavily-influenced by Lovecraft and Poe and his primitive death growls. His fascination with The Necronomicon, occultism, Cthulhu Mythos, and the undead are present in all his music. None of Kam's works matched the unspeakable horror themes of The Grotesquery's Tales of The Coffin Born. This album's fantastic because of its sinister death metal sound and the macabre concepts in the lyrics, and it's one of Kam's finest works.
Tales of The Coffin Born has a very deep horror concept, which you could identify from the dark audio intros of each song. An echoing voice with an ever-transforming tone begins each track with terrifying accounts of death, darkness, murder, and other dark matters. At least thirty seconds after this mysterious man's story-telling, powerfully heavy guitars and pounding drums kick in with complete fury and energy. After a while, Kam's monstrous vocals continue the horror story. Almost every song functions like this, but there's nothing generic about these songs at all. The lyrics and intros make the album very interesting, as if you're listening to an old 1940s horror show on the radio, but the songwriting is flawless. So many catchy riffs, in the vein of songs by bands like Entombed, Grave, and Carnage make this album a masterpiece.
The musicians on this album really pulled it off in manifesting so much heaviness, darkness, and horror. Kam's vocals are much more powerful on this album than on any of his other work of his various other projects. Behind Kam's intense vocals is the guitar work of Rogga Johansson, and he is the mastermind behind many small Swedish death metal projects. His crushing riffs go along really well with Kam's brutal voice and the terrific story he talks about. Rogga also incorporates more sinister atmosphere with very slow, melodic guitar solos that are mixed together with his brutal riffing. Brynjar Helgetun performs great drum duties. There are no blast-beats or really technical drumming on Tales Of The Coffin Born (except the first part of Sins Of His Father), and this album definitely didn't need it. It's an album that follows the old school Swedish death metal style. Johan Berglund's bass can be heard loud and clear behind the rest of the instrumentation, which is something you never get to hear on any new death metal albums! Johan Berglund's deep, heavy bass is easily heard and blends in with the rest of the heaviness and darkness of this album.
By far, I see this project as Kam Lee's best. I thought Bone Gnawer's Feast Of Flesh was Kam Lee's finest new work until I heard this album. Kam has some decent music with his other projects, but the amazing songwriting and lyrics of The Grotesquery which incorporates old school death metal brutality and a really dark atmosphere makes this Kam's greatest project. The astonishing work of Tales of The Coffin Born is parallel to From Beyond, Kam Lee's classic album.
Overall, Tales Of The Coffin Born is a dark, horrifying masterpiece of macabre and an excellent debut. Song highlights: Coffin Birth, This Morbid Child, Necromantic Ways, The Terrible Old Man, Nightmares Made Flesh, and Fall Of The House of Grotesque.
