Paranoia - Месть зла

The entertainment ceases quickly. - 40%

The Russian Paranoia is/was a fun band with thrash tuning and an effect-seeking vocalist that lasted only one album, and perhaps it was best that way. It’s just not interesting enough. Songs being slower and heavier than thrash make it sound like Helstar, but with only guitars, drums and vocals audible. Of course vocals differ, but the guitar-sound is a lot like Helstar’s and Exciter’s least complicated songs. The vocalist on the other hand sounds just like every Russian metal vocalist does, hard-on trying more to be powerful than to sing. This particular one sounds more mature than Kruiz’s one though.

I tend to think that Paranoia’s songs are too bland, not only uniqueness towards other bands but also to each other. If you have heard one song, you’ve heard them all. And it’s not as if it’s some crushing quality that makes you headbang for half an hour, losing track of time. It’s fun for a song or two, but then one realizes that the only difference between song A and B is the new effects – be it marching boots, some strange solo, laughs or whatever.

What disturbs me the most is that it is not heavy metal and it is not thrash. If you can’t decide which way to go, well then you end up screaming lines in school bus tempo and seeking stupid effects to make the songs distinguishable. The only solid part about Paranoia’s music is the drumming. If it only wasn’t as slow and generic as it is now. Conclusion: I don’t find any reason to recommend this to anyone.
