Ozzy always does best when helped along by a group of musicians that actually know what they’re doing, and even at this state of the game when his voice is gradually deteriorating and his expressiveness and range is strongly limited, he does quite well with the aid of Type O Negative providing the music. It’s always been the case that a limited vocal range requires a really dense atmosphere being accomplished around the singing to keep things interesting, particularly when you’re covering a really simple song. Peter Steele and the others definitely pull their share not only in recreating the music within the metal format, but warping it into something dark and heavy enough to be conducive to Ozzy’s nasally, proto-doom metal bellows.
The texture of this song is very heavily layered. It consists of a really strong bass presence that is so drenched with phasing effects and distortion that it sounds like a synthesized, a light coating of keyboards to give the song something of a trance-inducing state of dreaminess, guitar drones that draw from a variety of rock and metal influences, from Black Sabbath to U2, and a really dry drum sound that provides a counterbalance to a very effects oriented arrangement. Like many of Type O Negative’s various covers, you can hear the original happy song buried deep within the dense exterior, but the end result is something that may occasionally go into a major key yet remain a peculiar blend of being somber and nightmarish.
Ever since the release of “Ozzmosis” Ozzy has made it a habit of hiding his better songs on single b-sides and movie soundtracks, and this is yet another example of it. Technically it’s not an Ozzy song at all, but more of a Type O Negative song with Ozzy doing a guest vocal slot, while Peter and the others are content to simply play their instruments and maybe occasionally offer a gang chants in a quasi-punk rock fashion here and there. It is recommended that anyone who likes traditional doom and is also a fan of Howard Stern and classic rock music to check out the soundtrack that this came off of.
