Misery Index - Hang Em High

A Grindcore Misery Index - 77%

orphy, March 24th, 2007

Misery Index is a death metal band that's known for fusing crust and grindcore influences into their music, creating catchy yet brutal songs. With the "Hang Em High" EP, we see the band leaning far more into grindcore, as if the song lengths don't give that away.

Here we are given 3 songs that are just over a minute in length, plus an acoustic version of "Discordia" from their latest full length of that name. As per usual, Misery Index smashes through with grinding riffs and the odd breakdown for intense brutality. And as to be expected, the lyrics have a definite purpose. Again though, instead of the usual essay length lyrics Misery Index is known for, we are given much more grind-oriented lyrics. Short and too the point, fitting in well with the songs. Perhaps Misery Index felt a bit humorous with this release, as the track "Scene and Not Heard" approaches its topic with some goofy lyrics but with a definite purpose.

The last track, as mentioned, is an acoustic version of "Discordia". It seems like it's a bit of a novelty song, but somewhat enjoyable. Not much else can be said about it.

That about sums up this little 7" EP. A much more grindcore oriented Misery Index is to be found here. Perhaps this is a glimpse of what Misery Index is to become on their next LP? Perhaps, or maybe it's just an off-shot. Nonetheless, I would recommend this to Misery Index fans who want to hear some new material by the band. The release may only be 7 minutes long, but it is quite enjoyable!
