I tried to enjoy this album, I really did. I stopped listening to this tedious load of shit after track 7 (can't believe I was so patient). Intrigued by all the very positive reviews, I decided to give this a listen. Here's why it sucks: this whole album is just too damn repetitive. It's one of those records that you listen to and just can't wait for the current track to come to an end as you're hopeful the next song won't be so completely uneventful.
I thought the Scandinavians were supposed to be really good when it came to melodic death metal (maybe only Sweden), but then again calling Mercenary melodic death metal is entirely misleading. What they are (or at least just this album) is straight up metalcore wrapped around a very obnoxious vocalist trying to impress with his mediocre singing range. How is this metalcore, you ask? Well, it's stuffed with a bunch of breakdowns. Isn't that always the argument? Moving on!
To give this album some credit, the first two songs aren't that bad. They actually have some catchy choruses and the singer is somewhat bearable. But after that it's almost as if the band went on a filler spree, writing boring song after boring song. I don't know what it is, but at times it just seems that the overall instrumentation feels to be paving way for an excessive vocal spotlight with the absence of any interesting moments occurring from the guitars or the keyboards. Besides that, what you get more than anything in this album is a breakdown with the lead singer moaning along with the drums and guitars, plus a piano track which always feels completely out of place.
The riffs are boring, the solos feel uninspired, the singer gets annoying, the songs drag out too long, and overall this album is overrated crap.
