Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered was Marduk’s fourth full length studio album and my first Marduk purchase. After hearing only a few Marduk songs I was already fairly impressed with them. So when I bought this album I expected nothing less than fast, brutal, black metal… and that was exactly what I was rewarded with. There is maybe one or two slow (by Marduks standards, of course) bits on the album and the rest is just pure chaos!
I must admit, the first time I heard this album I thought it was quite ‘meh’ and it didn’t really sound that great, the few songs I had heard were off Panzer Division Marduk and didn’t really sound like this album at all. But after a few more listens the album grew on me. Now I think this album is one of the best black metal albums ever released. Morgan’s riffs by far make this album what it is. Infernal Eternal, Dracul Va Domni Din Nou in Transilvania and Beyond the Grace of god feature some awesome riffs produced by Morgan. His riffs are fast, brutal and melodic yet at the same time they still sound very black metal.
As mentioned before, this was my first Marduk purchase so I have not heard any of Marduk’s releases prior to Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered’ so I can not compare Legion to previous vocalists, but I can safely say he did an incredible job on this album. Fredrik Andersson, the drummer for Marduk through this album does a pretty impressive job; he doesn’t lack speed, that’s for sure. It’s just that his drums seem some what repetitive throughout the album. Through a few songs I hear the same bet over and over with a few fills hear and there. Still did a good job and it fits the music.
If you’re getting into Marduk this album would be a safe option. This album sums up what Marduk are about… speed, brutality and black metal! A great album and I’ll defiantly be buying more Marduk albums in the future.
