This is the first 7" of a serie of six split albums released by Relapse Records (which feature some of the greatest modern grindcore acts like Machetazo, Mumakil, Inhume, Antigama, Total Fucking Destruction, etc) and it's also my favourite.
On the first side, we have the spanish old school grind/death band Machetazo. This two songs seem like take-offs from their 2005 full lenght "Sinfonias del Terror Ciego", because they show a notable death metal approach and a raw production similar to that LP. The first song, "Fosa Común" (Mass Grave) goes on that way: catchy and down-tuned guitars (obviously influenced by old school Swedish death), deep growls with occasional high shrieks, and prominent bass (it's a shame that Carlos Cadaver has now left the band, because he delivers here some excellent, clean and technical bass lines, in the vein of Steve DiGorgio-era Autopsy). The following song, "Miasma" is more grindcore and straigh-forward, with plenty of blast-beats, but it still has that death metal heaviness.
Total Fucking Destruction appear on the other side of the vinyl. They are, for sure one of the most original and interesting grind bands nowadays. If you have listened to "Zen And The Art Of Total Fucking Destruction", you know what to expect: weird song structures, with pretty much intricated riffs, multi-vocal attack, pounding drums and craziness a go-gó.I think they sound a bit like Brutal Truth latest' albums (actually, TFD is Rich Hoak's side-project), but even filthier and more complex.
To finish off, this 7" comes in white/red splatter vinyl and features awesome cover-art by Mike Hrubovcak (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, XXX Maniak, Mortician) which forms the picture of an alien autopsy (sick!!) along with the other five 7" covers of the SIimewave serie. I think that this EP is now out of stock, so if you are lucky enough to find it, don't hesitate:buy it.
