Ghost- Year Zero Single - 99%

enshrinedtemple, June 20th, 2013

Year Zero is a song by the Swedish band Ghost (B.C.). Their first album Opus Eponymous was nothing groundbreaking or new but it was well doom rock with a lot of 1970’s influence. Opus still swept the nation and become relatively popular and discussed as a band with a lot of potential for greatness. Ghost is definitely a love them or hate them kind of band.

Some see Ghost as a cheap gimmick band with all of the costumes and masks that they wear. Others are mystified by their anonymous nature and their theatrical live shows. Infesstissumam is their newest album which has spawned two singles. The first single is a freak-show carnival keyboard extravaganza called Secular Haze and the other is the much more interesting Year Zero.

Year Zero is one of the catchiest songs on the Infesstissumam album and was a good choice for a single. First off, the music video for the song is very well done. There is plenty of nudity and devilish themes to satisfy your innermost Satan. The lead singer Papa even shows off his own genitals if you really wanted to see that! The video is one of the best I have seen in quite some time and is much better than retro style Secular Haze video.

Musically this song is extremely catchy. The chorus is amazing and is a chant that makes you throw your fist in the air and hail Satan. There is a disco style beat going on in the song and that really shows their vast influences on the new album. Opus was straightforward doom rock while Infesstissumam breaks out of that mold and shows that the band is willing to let their diverse influences show. All of the instruments sound incredible especially the lead vocals. Papa is an extremely captivating singer whose voice is so perfect it sounds too good to be true. I love the clear style of the song altogether because I can hear all of the instruments perfectly. The bass is thumping, the guitar solo is one of the best on the album and the vocals are absolutely mesmerizing.

Year Zero is a stunning song that is one of the best that Ghost has done in their short career. It shows a wide range of influence from disco to the music psychedelic music of the 60’s and 70’s (Orez Raey is just Year Zero played backwards). The song is bound to get stuck in your head and you will find yourself blurting out lyrics like “Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer” and “Hell Satan, Archangelo Hell Satan, welcome Year Zero” I highly recommend Ghost and I especially encourage you to see them live. Year Zero is just one example of the true brilliance that they have achieved in a short period of time. Year Zero gets one point off because of the pointless Orez Raey. They could have put in some kind of backwards message or possibly some insight of what is being whispered at the end of Year Zero. Otherwise this song is perfection.
