I was expecting a little more out of this album after hearing their debut, but this more or less sounds like a continuation of "Monuments" This is not really a bad thing however, "Maledictum" is still a very worthwhile album that I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to many times. This album has a cleaner production than most black metal, and also a deeper, more bass heavy sound. Most of the songs are "progressive" ranging from a slow, heavy, almost old school death metal sound to the fast majestic black metal sound. In my opinion there are a few too many slow parts that can drag on or get a little boring, some people may find this to be the best part of the album, but I prefer the fast stuff. However I cannot deny that this album is full of just flat out "badass" riffs that will make you want to bang your head. There is some melody, but more of an aggressive hateful sound that drives the music.
The bass guitar and vocals actually really stand out and add a lot of depth to this album. The twang of the bass is loud and clear throughout the entire album and just sounds really awesome... I wish more black metal bands would do this in fact. Instead of being just a background instrument it is very much in the forefront which is pretty cool. The vocalist spits forth a very convincing hatred towards whatever it is that he hates, you (I) can understand almost every word. The vocalist uses a much lower scream than most black metal bands, closer to a growl, but still far from the barking growl of many death metal bands.
The drumming is executed flawlessly, but is nothing overly impressive to me. There's plenty of blasting and double bass, but it's more of a standard mid-fast speed than a "holy shit-fast speed' There is not a whole lot of variation in the drumming either aside from a rare fill here and there, which are more present in the slower guitar parts. Maybe it's more impressive to just play the same exact perfect blast beat for minutes at a time, but to the ears it can get a little repetitive.
It is a pretty long album, arguably too long (in my opinion) during the slow sludgy parts, but it's awesome riffage, use of the loud, clear bass and hate filled vocals definitely make it worth waiting through a few boring parts. I will say one thing about the last song on the album... When I first heard it I swore it was a cover song, it sounds out of place and even the vocal style is faster and more frantic. It threw me off at first, but it's actually a great song that screams of Bathory worship/tribute and that's never a bad thing m/
This is an album/band that could be very appealing to both black and death metal fans and anyone into just pure heavy metal.
