Here we got something really outstanding! This guy calling himself Nattulv created with “Gabreta Hyle” an album which really differs from the masses. It is not only the music which makes ”Gabreta Hyle” to a masterpiece, it is the whole concept.
To start with the point of creating something “new” and original, here we have an album you cannot put into any kind of Metal genre, it contains a bit of all. It is definitely not a Black Metal record, but contains lot of typical Black Metal guitars and vocals, it contains lots of Pagan Metal elements as flutes etc. but differs completely from all these trend followers, sometime it seems to be almost White Power/Oi oriented music, but simply more “Metal” and more raw. And then you got lots of acoustic parts in all the songs which varies with all the fast passages, and mainly these acoustic pats makes the whole album sounding different compared to every other record I heard before. These parts are not really my thing with its clear singed vocals or spoken lyrics and folk music instruments, but they fit completely into the concept and whole feeling of this record. It sounds as a medieval group of musicians that plays on a castle for the high society of the middle-age for evening entertainment (but do not forget this actually is a one-member project).
The lyrics on “Gabreta Hyle” makes at least 40% on its originality and perfection, they are all written in German language and deal about the castles and fortresses that are located in the surroundings of the man behind this project and their histories and tales. They are very well written and seem to be part wise very personally aswell. The music is all in all unique and the complete songwriting outstanding and original. You cannot explain this record, you must listen to it. The idea of creating something new and outstanding is completely fulfilled, as Nattulv wrote in the booklet and even if the music is often not my type of music I can identify with this record and its concept and the ideologies behind it. (What isn’t a point of writing an honest review, but makes it easier to explain the dimension of this album).
So here I will rate the whole result and not mainly the musical aspects which I would have rated a little lower. The problem is you have to understand the lyrics which follows along with the music to get the whole concept, so I mainly recommend the album to all German (understanding) listeners.
