IX Equilibrium is a great album. Now that that statement is out of the way, I'll actually begin about the music.
As is said by everyone else, Samoth really shines on this album. The rhythm guitar work is SUPERB. It's what carries this album from beginning to end; from the main rhythms in "Curse You All Men!" to the jumpy, almost bouncy, rhythm in "Of Blindness and Subsequent Seers", the whole album shreds along with amazing speed and great riffs. Ihsahn can write some great music, but implementing keyboards into their work? No, no, no... this just won't do. Also, the vocals. Why does everyone like Anthems so much? Because the music drowns out Ihsahn's shrieks. He should stick to Peccatum; at least there, he has no excuse for weak screams. As for the tracks themselves, all are really good, except for "The Source Of Icon E". Geez guys, did you fall into a pothole and damage your brains before writing this? Seriously, you can do a lot better.
This is the Emperor album that most people will say to overlook, but I disagree. It's still hard hitting; the drumming, while dumbed-down a little is still relatively black/extreme metal, the bass is great and the guitars are fucking superb, easily among some of the best I've heard. Just keep the keyboards out of Emperor; how they were on Nightside were decent, but don't implement them completely as on here. That's a no-no.
Check this out if you don't mind overlooking Ihsahn's girly screams and lame keyboarding. You just might find yourself enjoying it.
