Not bad... for a Devildriver album - 10%

CircleovZaphyan, February 5th, 2007

Let me get this straight, I dont normally write reviews here. As of lately, this might be my start. The reasoning behind my recent willingness to review some releases is simple. There has been a a bunch of crap recently that has come out in the metal scene that I can not and will not stand for. This release being one of them. That abortion called Abigail Williams being another. The new Blut Aus Nord having no metal on it, and people giving it a 100% is a third. Im glad Im the first to review this cockgobble of a metal album, and Im doing it for the people that like actual metal, and so they dont get caught up in the Choadrunner hype of this "death metal" band and actually buying this garbage. First of all this IS NOT death metal.

Im sorry to ruin some of your dreams if you actually like this crap, but this is nothing more than Devildriver worship. Thats right I said it.. because its true. Why has this band gotten a lot of attention lately? Maybe beacuse Chaodrunner is hyping it like none other, and that Talley is featured on drums, and the fact that they are advertised (on Chaodrunner and on their Myspace) as death metal. I dont blame you if you read something about Daath and said "Wow, Choadrunner signed a death metal band after all this time?". Thats what I did initially, and opted to check them out. The one song that has carried much of this hype is 'Ovum'. Its also on their Myspace, and Im going to be honest. It was actually a decent song. If all the songs on the release were like 'Ovum', it might be a decent death metal release... but NO. This is seriously the only song on the album that resembles any death metal (More melodic than anything, certainly not technical like ive seen advertised). The other songs on here might as well be Devildriver / Coal Chamber cover songs. Again... very lacking of anything death metal. If this album is goint to be called death metal, then the Metal-Archives might as well add Devildriver again and list them as black metal, as some homo originally submitted them as before being deleted altogether.

This release very much reminds me of another release I bought and was thoroughly diapointed when hearing it. I remember downloading a track off Red Harvest's 'Internal Punishment Programs' from Nocturnal Art's website. They featured the first song (Just like with Daath) and it was seriously awesome and full of metal. I thought to myself "Wow, Red Harvest is a metal band now... no more industrial nonsense." Boy was I wrong there, and boy was I also wrong with Daath. I only have myself to blame though... checking out a band that Choadrunner signed. Maybe I just forgot for a second that Choadrunner wanking for Nickelback and Slipknot has any say in metal anymore. What the hell was I thinking?

Im sure there will be some goon on here rating this a 80% or better, and his headline will say something like "Nevermind the elitists" or some other tomfoolery. That same person probably has his friends come over for weekly breakdance lessons, only doing it to Devildriver releases while wearing mesh trucker hats and Trivium T shirts. Now its time to address the song on this album called 'Dead on the Dancefloor'. OH MY GOD WHAT DID I JUST HEAR?? This is pure techno-dancecore. No, Im not exagerating... this is what you would hear in some dance club, or on a Static X album. After I heard it myself, its still hard to believe. I mean.... Cranium dedicated an entire song (Slaughter on the Dancefloor) to things like this, where a chainsaw dismembers disco-dancing poseurs. Obviously, Daath has never heard Cranium otherwise they would be running/disco-dancing away in fear.

I could go on forever about how much this album blows, but Ill cut it short. If you think Devildriver is "hella tight", then buy this. If not, buy some actual metal. The only way this didnt get a full blown 0%, is because of the one ok song on here 'Ovum'... and the drumming courtesy of Keven Talley being above average as usual by him. The black metal band Cult of Daath just plain takes a dump on this.
