Ahh...back in the day when Varg still did black metal. This album's riffs are pretty basic but there is no question they really add a lot of power to the album as an element of brilliance. Of course i love the screams done on this album, Varg rules are that. Much better than they were on det som et gang var. More distorted.
The first song on the album, Det som et gang var, starts out a pretty slow song for the beginning of the album. Despite that it is pretty lengthy and does get repetitive. Though it's still a great mind blowing intro.
The second song is a lot faster and reminds me much more of the sound of Varg's previous effort, Det som et gang var. I really enjoy how well vargs vocals work on this song. It flows really well together. The guitar work reminds me of early darkthrone albums such as a blaze in the northern sky and under a funeral moon. Sure it's far different, but the way it's executed and how the production goes together with the guitar work, along with the simple riffing. It sounds less distorted compared to other burzum releases such as filosofem.
on Inn I slottet fra drdemmen i am very dissapointed. The guitars and drumming do no justice towards Varg's vocals and none of the three instruments work very well together.
The final song on this album, Tomhet, is another one of Varg's ambient songs. It's amazing. The synthesizers make it sound very eartheal. It later has more atmospheric feel much like the hildskjalf album with the water type sound to it. Then to a flute/synth type thing that sounds very powerful and makes your hair stand on end. I don't know much ambient but for an ambient song this is a masterpiece.
Overall despite one horrid song this album is pure genius and i have to give Varg credit for another brilliant album.
