Burzum's Det Som Engang Var is an amazing album. It's not so generic like all of the other black metal then and now. Instead of playing something mediocre like darkthrone, moonblood, mayhem, immortal, and emperor were doing Varg Vikernes made a defining point in black metal and showed that there is room for creativity in the music. The riffs aren't the typical tremolo wankery that black metal likes to play and Varg screams. He didn't just try to sound evil like every one else was doing. He did his own thing.
To elaborate of the riffs: these are haunting and dark riffs in Burzum, especially det som engang var. Varg really puts personality and a certain feel into the riffs he plays on his albums. On Det Som Engang Var he does just that and proves that he can play something far different from everything else that was coming out at the time. Made a true gem that would be timeless forever as his guitar playing is to me. He doesn't play like Beetoven or anything but he still proves that he can make something entirely original. Some thing that puts personally and diversity intact within a closed minded arena.
This album is very unique and creative. Very important release for those who are interested in black metal and want to find something very special. If you don't have this album already fucking get it. Det Som En Gang Var is by far an excellent choice and worth the purchase, or better yet just download it so you don't pay for the churches he burned ;)
